If you hold ETH and want USDT, you have two main options: move it to an exchange, sell, and withdraw; or swap it directly in your wallet. Both get you there. The difference is in steps, cost and control.
How an in-wallet swap works
A swap service takes the coin you're giving, converts it, and sends the new coin back to you, usually in a single step. Behind the scenes it trades on exchange markets, but you don't need your own exchange account, order book or withdrawal.
You see an estimate up front: the rate, the amount you'll receive and how long it should take. Because prices move while the swap runs, the final amount can be slightly higher or lower than the estimate.
Side by side
| Exchange | In-wallet swap | |
|---|---|---|
| Steps | Deposit, wait, sell, buy, withdraw | Choose coins and amount, confirm |
| Accounts | A separate exchange account | None beyond your wallet |
| Fees | Trading fees plus withdrawal fees | Built into the swap rate |
| Price | You set the price with limit orders | Market rate at the time of the swap |
| Best for | Frequent or very large trades | Quick conversions between coins |
What to check before you swap
- The amount you'll receive, not just the rate. It's the clearest way to compare offers.
- The network. USDT exists on several networks. If you're sending to another wallet, make sure it uses the same network.
- The minimum. Very small swaps can cost more in network fees than they're worth.
- Swaps are final. Once a swap starts, it can't be reversed.
Swapping with Helio
Helio compares several exchange services for every swap and shows you the best offer, with the rate, fee and arrival time, before you confirm. Helio adds no swap fee. Your swapped coins land in your Helio balance, or you can send them straight to another wallet, and we email you when the swap completes. See the details on our rates & fees page.
